Case Study

Selma: Online

Overview

Working alongside the creative team at LeftField Labs on behalf of Harvard’s Hutchinson Center for African & African American Research, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, our mission was to turn the history of Civil Rights in America into an interactive curriculum. We used clips from the movie Selma to support the story from post-Civil War 1865 to MLK-era 1965 and through today. Using interactive timelines, a dynamic scrolling technique, historical imagery, footage, and movie clips, we put together an immersive story that supports an important curriculum.

We started with 100 years of history.
And our writers put together a script.

Then, we designed a look and feel for the brand.

We used maps, historic photographs, and video to create an engaging educational experience with a unique look.

We designed scrolling animations, transitions, and movement to create dynamic storytelling only possible online.

And we integrated clips from Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” (2014) to bring the history to life.

Finally, we wrote and designed supplemental materials including a teacher’s discussion guide and step-by-step outline for students to take action in real life.

The press written about us celebrated the innovative digital educational experience.
